I read this in the morning paper and thought it was interesting.

<<But Arelia Margarita Taveras says her gambling began to spin out of control. She would go days at the tables without food or sleep, cleaning her teeth with disposable wipes so she didn't have to leave the table and sometimes passing out.>>

The part about cleaning her teeth with disposable wipes kept me interested enough to keep reading!

We need some harsh sanctions in place to discourage money grubbing/"always the victim" scum like this.

And Disney you're next. I'm a full blown park addict and you keep allowing me to buy park hoppers and stay in your hotels for $200-400 per night.

Crack has BOTH a mental AND a physical aspect. So if you really want to nitpick, crack is a worse habit.

"It creeps up on you, the impulse. It's a sickness."

It's not a sickness. She was right the first time. It's an impulsive bad habit.

I hope they countersue her for stupidity. Is that possible? :p

I think there is ample evidence here that it doesn't take a lot of brains to be a lawyer.

And before STPH jumps all over me...

My father was a lawyer; I have a nephew who is a lawyer. It can be a fine and honorable profession. But the "let's sue everyone" lawyers should be disbarred.

This isn't about the casino not caring about her health it's about lost money plain and simple.

Ahhhh, the old "shotgun" approach---- a ubiquitous and basic legal strategy used by just about any complainant and his/her counsel.

"Hey let's throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks" is the prevailing attitude.

Anyone throwing their money away in a casino is only hurting themselves. IMO the casino bears no responsibility for customer stupidity. None whatsoever.

Seriously, I hope she gets countersued and loses every penny she has left.

And what's the deal with her avoiding jail anyway? The woman STOLE from people, right?

But the unheralded dorks perpetuating lawsuit abuse are common folk, folk like some of us who comprise juries. These juries love to give away other people's money. Heck, what do they care? It's not coming out of their pockets so they tend to be liberal when awarding. That is the problem few talk about.

Juries are more or less the last real chance to bring common sense back into our legal system and knowing how stupid and emotional the general populous is I'm not holding my breath for positive changes.

But then what happens is these big numbers become commonplace, and when people sue smaller companies and individuals they ask for more and more, and that's where things get skewed and people get hurt.

That's not justice. In fact, it's more like a casino.
