I can say via my own eyes that there's no need for exaggeration (I myself stood in an hours long line just to enter a grocery store on Saturday!), were they just to lazy to go out and take some additional footage or something?

We have NHK World available via antenna and that's what I've been watching (Channel 18-2 for those of you in the LA market), but I've gotten the impression that most of the US coverage has been showing more of the physical devastation rather than the affected people - probably because they appear to be much calmer and in much better shape than we're used to seeing from disaster areas.
