Romney Ad Exposes Media's Chronic Inability To Use The Word 'Lie'

GOP 2012 contender Mitt Romney's recent ad has gotten a ton of attention from the press because it contains a brief clip of President Barack Obama saying these words, consecutively, in order: "If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose." BOOM! What a clip, right? Why did Barack Obama say such a thing in public? Oh, that's right, he said those words consecutively and in order because back in 2008, an aide to John McCain said those words consecutively and in order, and Obama quoted that aide to use the words against McCain -- whose campaign, if you recall, did not exactly handle the 2008 economic collapse all that well.

As everyone points out, Romney's use of the words out of context is misleading. But it seems that what very few people are willing to say, as Too Much Joy once sang, is: "That's a lie. You're a liar."

The context of what Obama was saying was that the US may have been less aggressive than we could have been about forging trading partnerships with nations in the pacific region, but unfortunately said "we've been lazy" while speaking off the cuff.

Romney immediately pounced with charges that "Obama thinks americans are lazy" - completely glossing over the context in which the comment was made.

And who's surprised? After a decade in the public spotlight, most of it spent actively campaigning, we've seen Romney and we know what he's about. He apparently has no moral center, and will say or do anything if he thinks it will improve his chances of election.

It doesn't matter what the hot-button issue is - immigration, health care, abortion, gay rights, financial regulations, gun laws (he's a "lifelong hunter" you know) - he's been squarely on both sides of every issue.

He's also the only major GOP candidate that has not agreed to sit-down interviews with the various political tv shows - even fox.

Fortunately, most people can see him for exactly what he is, even conservatives who are usually more easily duped. Pundits still give him the best chance at the nomination, but I'm not seeing it. He may win NH and a few other states, but there's just too many nomination contests - 57 in total - where he'll be lucky to come in third.

My general loathing of all things GOP is well established, but that said, I'm really enjoying this primary campaign. And I'm predicting a surprise ending with a twist. Niether Cain, Bachmann, Perry or Gingrich can be counted out - yet - there's still a path to the nomination for any of them. Which just goes to show you how crazy the republican party has become.

I'm also predicting that Obama wins a close election in 2012, and maintains a dem majority in the senate. The house remains hopelessly split, and even more useless than before.

    thoughts?

I'm not a "conspiracy theorist" but it does seem to send several subliminal messages out - the most obvious to me being the message that Obama's supporters are urban, gritty city folk (not like YOU); while Romney's are good ol' down home New Hampshirites...

The black/white thing is going to be an undercurrent to the election, and there's no steering around it. It's disappointing but not surprising that Romney would stoop to race-based messaging - especially right outta the gates like this.

Romney's the one that's actually gone and done it, but I wouldn't put it past most of the other republican candidates to do the same thing.

It makes sense, considering that Romney has stated multiple times this year that he's "unemployed," while the President has repeatedly stated, "I'm part of the 1%."

Yeah, Mittens, cry me a river. An unemployed individual who's worth hundreds of millions. Gimme a break! You're part of the 1% just like Obama. At least you should be publicly honest about that like the President.
