I do know that one (and only one of many) arguments that women made when agitating for the vote here in the US is that they should be able to vote so that white middle class women could "dilute" the vote of poor black men. (How the votes of poor black women entered into it I don't know, it was their arguement, not mine.) Perhaps race is a difference of degrees and gender is a difference of kind? Perhaps it was just this black man and this white woman? That we'll never know.
