Blago: State lawmakers cheat on spouses, drink too much February 12, 2009 BY DAVE MCKINNEY Springfield Bureau Chief SPRINGFIELD -- Refusing to go quietly, former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich spat a new round of venom today at the same lawmakers who drove him out from office, accusing them of having affairs and drinking too much while being "holier than thou." "This is how the system in Springfield works, where a bunch of these lawmakers go down to Springfield," Blagojevich said. "Nobody even knows who they are. They're away from their families. It's a whole different world down there. A bunch of them are cheating on their spouses. "A lot of them drink in excess. Very few of them know what's going on. They just take their marching orders from legislative leaders, and then the legislative leaders have to do things for them to keep them happy,"Blagojevich told WLS-AM's "Don Wade and Roma Show." In one instance, Blagojevich said, he was approached by a legislative leader for help in diffusing a marital crisis that faced a rank-and-file lawmaker. The ex-governor did not name either official. That leader "came to us because one of his members was sleeping with his secretary. And then the wife found out and she wanted that secretary fired. But this guy was in love with his secretary so he goes to the legislative leader. They come to us. They want us to hire this woman so that we can keep that guy happy and then, you know, hope they might work with us on some issues," Blagojevich said. "I don't want to be too judgmental. But these same guys get up and they get holier than thou on their soapboxes, and there they are doing that sort of thing, promoting that kind of thing," he said "And, yeah, people are human, and they make mistakes. But cheating on your wife and sleeping with your secretary, that's the wrong thing to do," Blagojevich said. House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago), who led the House impeachment effort against Blagojevich, ridiculed the ex-governor’s tell-all performance this morning. “I don’t understand what a person of his status is doing spreading rumors and gossip of this nature. I don’t know how it does him any good. I don’t know how it does the institution he used to represent any good,” she said. Blagojevich also teed off on Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago), whose district takes in the governor’s Northwest Side home. Blagojevich belittled Cullerton for driving "around the neighborhood" in a Jaguar. The ex-governor also said Cullerton has conflicts of interest because his law firm, Thompson Coburn, "does business" with state government. No contracts could be found on the state comptroller’s contractual database, and a Cullerton spokesman said he had no knowledge of the firm doing business with the state. “He’s gone. He’s been removed as governor. We have a new governor, and we have the same problems,” Cullerton spokesman Toby Trimmer said. “President Cullerton’s desire right now is not to engage in any public battle between Rod Blagojevich and himself

It's too easy to dismiss as the rantings of a bitter guy, and makes his potential subsequent revelations less likely to gain traction. Bad move on his part if he really has the goods on anyone.
