So in the last few weeks- Saying a beauty pagent contestant is pretty is offensive. Teachers using red ink to correct tests and papers is upsetting to students The wussification continues.

It's being offended for other groups in this country when we don't bother to ask if they are offended. And you know who's to blame for this? White people. Other groups don't have time for all this bs.

At my kids' elementary school, kids fail all the time. So does my anecdotal story trump yours? >>It's giving medals at a kids soccer or baseball game for finishing in 8th place as opposed to 1st.<< I hear this canard all the time. So we teach six year olds about competition? Getting a trophy for participating has been going on in children's sports forever. As they get older, that ebbs away and the real competition begins in junior high and high school, as it should. >>It's being offended for other groups in this country when we don't bother to ask if they are offended.<< How about not letting the squeaky wheel get the oil? There's always stupid people saying stupid stuff, and unfortunately, the media covers it because it's a sexier headline than, "Most People Are Normal, Move Along." How about not reading stupid stories and getting all outraged by conflating it as the norm?

Some say it's just a part of growing up and being a tough, resilient person, but I consider severe bullying to rank among child abuse in mental trauma, and occasionally, physical as well. So if they are coddling the kids a little, why not? If it helps make the passage through childhood a little easier, I'm all for it.

Still, he likes to play and has fun and feels good being out on the court trying. As he gets older, he'll either grow out of his awkwardness and become more competitive, or move on to other hobbies. And of course, in a few years he won't just be able to sign up, he'll have to try out and face the sting of rejection. But I suppose instead of getting a small, plastic participation trophy as a memory that they played, they should be given an "I'm a Loser" t-shirt, because it builds character. Or something. I'm over people without children whining about the trophy thing. Kids aren't dumb. They know when they win and lose. They like winning, they don't like losing. What exactly do you plan to teach a nine year old by withholding a stupid plastic trophy?

He's going to have to find another thing to be good at once he "knows" he isn't good at school work. That isn't wussification - it's trying to encourage the kid to keep at his studies without embarrassing him in front of his peers. Handing out trophies or ribbons for participation to younger kids marks the season for them. They know that it doesn't mean that they are league champions - it means that they started something and stuck with it even when it wasn't fun. It is still a measure of accomplishment even if it isn't a measure of outstanding ability. It isn't about making them wusses. It isn't about making them feel good even when they fail. It is about making them feel that their efforts were noticed. You don't gain anything from shaming a child into thinking that they aren't any good at something. You gain a lot when you encourage them to keep trying.

Totally awesome. Box of Taco Bell tacos falls somewhere in between.

All I'm saying is less than 1% of the country would be offended at that. So why on earth make it sound like America is going to hell in a hand basket because, apparently, everyone everywhere is offended at this?
