The percentage of Republican "base voters" who say they are "almost certain" to vote is up to 81%. Another 14% say they are "very likely" to vote. GOP pollster Fred Steeper says his surveys show that the centerpiece of the election among GOP voters is concern for winning the war on terror "and worries that Democrats will abdicate that responsibility." A full 56% of the base reported "extremely strong feelings" against the position of leading Democrats on the war on terror. Other issues are also playing a role, with over 70% of base Republican voters saying they are extremely motivated to vote by Democratic attempts to derail President Bush's attempts to make his tax cuts permanent. The nominations of John Roberts and Sam Alito to the Supreme Court also scored well among the GOP faithful. The poll also confirmed the wisdom of leading Democrats who had squelched talk that impeachment hearings against President Bush will be on the party's agenda should it win control of Congress. Mr. Steeper reports that "60% of the base has extremely negative feelings about the Democrats' impeachment threats -- placing it among the strongest in the survey." You can therefore expect Republicans to highlight impeachment-friendly Democratic leaders such as Michigan Rep. John Conyers, who is poised to take over the chairmanship of the House Judiciary committee if the GOP loses its majority. -- John Fund<<

No matter who wins, there will be many ways of spinning the results. But it's clear that no matter who wins overall, neither side can claim a clear 'mandate' (not that they won't do it anyway -- LOL!)

Exactly!!! And you know why, Ed? Because you tend to gravitate toward people like yourself. (Which makes for an interesting picture in my mind) In any case, I remember people in the Hollywood crowd expressing complete disbelief after Bush won the first and for that matter, the second election. These Hollywood people said things like "we don't know a single person who voted for Bush!" Well of course not, because they did not know or associate with any normal people outside of the Hollywood community. Nothing has changed in 8 years as far as I can see. Devout liberals are completely in the dark as to the fact that there is a whole country between the west coast and east coast. And most of that country is relatively conservative. They may have their doubts as the prevailing media continue to cover all that is bad about life in America, but in the end, they usually return to their conservative values.

Now, as then, they are dozing in the campaign's homestretch, like Aesop's hare, lulled by rosy predictions and the premature applause of Hollywood and the mainstream press. Soon, however, they may awake to discover that while they snoozed before the finish line, George W. Bush hunkered down in his tough shell, kept his slow legs moving, and inched them out. The president has had a rough year since his reelection. But the furor is now subsiding, and once again, turtle-like, his poll numbers are creeping forward. The economy continues to grow. Interest rates, unemployment and inflation remain manageable. Gas may fall to $2 a gallon. It matters little whether the president is as responsible for the price decline as he was for its rise - the public feels better all the same. In hindsight, Hurricane Katrina is increasingly seen as the singular natural disaster it was - made worse by lapses in government at all levels. And too much federal largess, rather than too little, is the new worry.<<
