    >> police department has launched an investigation into whether officers participated in the giant looting spree that overtook the city after Hurricane Katrina, a spokesman said Thursday.

News reports in the aftermath of the storm put officers at the scene of some of the heaviest looting, the Wal-Mart in the Lower Garden District. Some witnesses -- including a Times-Picayune reporter -- said police were taking items from shelves.

"Out of 1,750 officers, we're looking into the possibility that maybe 12 officers were involved in misconduct," police spokesman Marlon Defillo said. <<

The Police Department has 1,750 officers.

He rejected the use of the term "looting" but said authorities were investigating "the possibility of appropriation of non-essential items during the height of Katrina, from businesses." <<

    >>The Sixth District - like most of New Orleans, a checkerboard of wealth and poverty - was the scene of heavy looting, with much of the stealing confined to the lower-income neighborhoods. A particular target was a Wal-Mart store on Tchoupitoulas Street, bordering the city's elegant Garden District and built on the site of a housing project that had been torn down.

The looters told a reporter from The Times that they followed police officers into the store after they broke it open, and police commanders said their officers had been given permission to take what they needed from the store to survive. A reporter from The Times-Picayune said he saw police officers grabbing DVD's. <<

Is it shocking that the NOPD was corrupt? It had the worse record of any major American city. Do you think every "bad apple" has been let go before Katrina? Think again.

For some perspective, take my city, LA.--puleeze!

15 years or so ago, there were stories of LAPD officers phoning phoney burgulary at electronics stores in the Hollywood division area, then units would arrive and systematically loot the stores, filling up their squad cars. Ten years ago two LAPD cops moonlighted as bank robbers and stole drugs from police impound lockers. They later tried to lessen their jail time by recounting how they and other cops would systematically lie on their arrests of people, sending folks unjustly to jail.

As late as five years ago, there were stories that the deputy chief, under Bernard Parks was laundering drug money from his son into real estate.

So some of you guys are "shocked" that SOME cops are corrupt? Shocking!!!!!!!

Did you hear the one about a President who misled a whole country into going to war??? I guess that one didn't make it on Fox News.

    Stupidity.

Even his Poppy refused the opportunity for a coup 'd gras because he was advised by DoD Secrt'y and CJCS Powell that removing Saddam would only break-up the country, giving Iran dominance in the Gulf for decades.

    >>One incident that Foti's probe is focusing on took place at Amerihost Inn and Suites just days after the storm hit, said police spokesman Capt. Marlon DeFillo. It was captured on tape by a reporter from WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge and a photographer from WAFF-TV in Huntsville, Alabama.

Officials viewed the TV news video showing an officer reaching for a gun as he blocked media from a door to the 10th floor, where he and seven other police officers were thought to be staying, DeFillo said .(See the video behind the investigation -- 3:50)

The hotel's owner, Osman Khan, told CNN that on the night of August 29, when the city flooded, 70 police officers had moved into his Canal Street hotel. He said that 62 went out to fight looters and thugs on the streets, while eight launched a four-day drinking and looting binge.

"They'd leave [at] nine or 10 at night and come back 4:30 in the morning," carrying "everything from Adidas shoes to Rolex watches," Khan said.

The eight officers were drinking almost all of the time, said hotel engineer Perry Emery, and when he came to the men's 10th floor room to bring towels, he saw "jewelry, generators, fans."

"One time they came back with a bunch of weapons," Emery said. He said he had no doubts about what he witnessed: "These were New Orleans police officers -- looting."

Several other witnesses said police are continuing to loot unoccupied homes.

Erlaine McLaurin said she saw two police cars pull up to an apartment building down the street from where she lives. Then she and her father watched as two officers walked inside and came out with their arms full.

"They [filled] up the white car, the police car," McLaurin said. "He got a four-pack of soda, a microwave, CD player. Put that in," she said. "I know everybody that lives here. Ain't no cops live here." <<
