Anyone ever say "George W. Bush has harmed any chance that voters will send another white guy...?" Yeah, no. Nobody has. Cause it's a blatantly disgusting, racist statement. Keep polling for this guy folks...you might just get him.

How about Occam's Razor: the garbage that comes out of Trump's mouth is overwhelmingly acceptable and even appealing to the GOP.

Originally Posted By Dabob2 <He's trolling the country, and sadly, getting all the attention he so desperately craves.> This reminded me of a column I read this morning. There's a school of thought that Trump, now that he's atop the polls, will attempt to "look presidential" in the upcoming debate. He will be calm, try to offer at least reasonable SOUNDING answers to questions (even if there has been to date zippo substance or details behind such pronouncements as "I'll stop jobs going to China" or "I have a secret plan to defeat ISIS" that some people are eating up as though he's actually said anything.) In other words, pointedly not say anything outrageous, and further fool the people he's already fooled into thinking "Hm... he does more than just 'tell it like it is,' he sounds reasonable. He could really be a good president." That's a possible strategy. Then there are those who note, in the words of this columnist, "I don't remember Trump ever settling for 10 percent of available attention." My guess is that he's going to try for Plan A, but if any of the others goad him in any way, he won't be able to resist a counter-attack. He has about the thinnest skin imaginable (combined with the largest ego) and can't stand even a perceived slight. The thing is, he is unlikely to say anything that would either sour his current fans, or attract the still lion's share of the GOP who say they will never vote for him. He doesn't seem to realize that 20% of the electorate is only a winning slice when there are 17 candidates. Once it's down to 3 or 4, it isn't any more. The question is how long the winnowing process will take (and it may very well take longer this time, post-Citizens United), and how many states he might actually win before it happens.

I don't think Plan A will work, because the rabble he's roused isn't looking for Steady Eddie leadership. They want someone who is going to maintain that level of outrage all the way. They really don't care about decorum, or looking presidential, and I think Trump playing it too cool right now, this soon, won't help him as much as acting like a jackass has up to now.

But if we see Plan A, that means he thinks he has his fans locked up and is trying to broaden his appeal. He must know that a large share of the GOP electorate has said they'll never vote for him, and to me, if he goes with Plan A that means he thinks he can win some of them over. < I figured this all was just Trump being Trump, and he loved the attention of RUNNING for president, but would never in a million years actually want to win.> I thought that too, but sometimes people start believing their own PR. I'm pretty sure he really does believe he's somehow the smartest, most classy, most qualified man in the race. I also predict that if indeed he does hit his ceiling when the field winnows and someone else gets the nomination, he will blame it on the media and "Washington," and if the Democrat wins in 2016, he will go to his grave saying that if only he had been the nominee he would have beaten said Democrat "in the hugest landslide ever. It wouldn't even have been close. And I would have been the greatest president since Lincoln, maybe ever. I don't know. Some people think Lincoln was good. I know I would have been great."

You can see the guy's head swell every time they come up with a new poll showing him in the lead. He is a perfect narcissist. He feeds on attention and adulation. Why else would he dump such vast sums of money on such a long shot at being President? But he thinks he can win this thing, and perhaps he can. If Republican voters would embrace someone as positively ridiculous as Sarah Palin, then they could possibly turn to embrace Donald Trump. Remember, were talking about Republicans here.

She parlayed her fifteen seconds of fame as John McCain's uniquely implausible running mate into a semi-lucrative punditry career, until the channels figured out that as pundit she had very little to say, and into a modestly lucrative reality show career, shows with snowmobiles and rifles and people talking in all seriousness about their man-caves. She also had a career in The Beauty Pageants, which is, let's face it, the primary measure Donald Trump uses to evaluate whether or not a female member of the human race is worth his time. " (snip) "To be clear, I do not believe that Sarah Palin only approves of Donald Trump because Donald Trump once said a nice thing about her. They are, clearly, soulmates. Both are certain that everyone around them—scientists, policy makers, government analysts, military strategists, the collected populations of entire nations and continents—is stupid, and that only they, with their Dazzling Not-Elite Intellect, are able to cut through the fog of existing knowledge and proclaim a new era of bright, shiny, classy truth for the masses. What the hell, make her a cabinet secretary. Why not."
