And even if we include the eight years of Reagan, the first President Bush occupied the White House for a total of 12 years. Now if Hillary wins the Presidency twice I will be 42 once it's time for her to leave. That will mean 36 of my 42 years have been dominated by these two families. My question is how did this happen?

But if it did, then that means Jeb Bush could take over in 4 or 8 years, so we'd have Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton/Bush. And after that, how old will Chelsea be? So we could have Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton, then the two Bush daughters, making it Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton/Bush/Bush. My question is, how did Amy Carter get cut out of the process?

If many people decide to do this, she won't get very far. >>What I asked was how did our Presidential elections come to feature either Bush or Clinton for the past 20+ years.<< How did it not? Both took the time to get elected in offices that made them the front runner. Besides, your question might get some people mad in this forum. They think you hate Hillary if you don't give her a pass.

Originally Posted By ecdc >>What we need is a law to prohibit nepotism in government.<< Part of me agrees, but part of me is wary. There's little question that our electoral system has become a complete joke. It's about the money, the well-connectedness, and the name recognition. The fact that we actually have a thread talking about Chuck Norris's influence in the election depresses me beyond belief, and suggests that our country is becoming less and less relevant on the world stage with each passing day. Believe me, no one wants the system to change more than I do. That said, I worry that we try and put band-aids on the system by passing term-limit laws, campaign finance laws, and discuss nepotism laws. We already have a system in place that provides for term-limits - it's called "free elections." But "We the People" refuse to educate ourselves, we refuse to register to vote, and we refuse to take ownership of our government and make the sacrifices we once did to make this country great. We slap flags and stickers on our cars and get outraged over the Dixie Chicks, and then we pretend like we've actually done something for our country and convince ourselves we're patriotic and we care. It reminds me of people I've supervised who think just showing up to work makes them the greatest employee of all-time. We seem to think that saying we're the greatest country in the world will magically make it so, and thanks to this stupidity, the opposite happens and we slowly, in more and more areas, lose our greatness. For like three straight days, Britney Spears' pregnant sister was the lead story on CNN. Conservatives really have to stop calling it the liberal media and start calling it the brainless media. Ok, so enough of my rant. I guess all I'm trying (and failing) to spit out is that I think we're damned if we do, damned if we don't. If we stand by and do nothing, then the system will only get worse and our Democracy will erode even more than it already has. But if we pass nepotism laws or term-limit laws, we also erode into our Democracy by trying to prop it up. We pass rule after rule after rule in a futile attempt to protect ourselves from ourselves, thinking we're dumb enough to elect the same idiot 4 or 5 times (I cry myself to sleep at night knowing that if George W. Bush could run again, he'd probably win), when the real solution is to be engaged and actually care about what happens. If we really cared about our country (hey I know how hard it is to get that flag from Wal-Mart and stick it on your car and all, but really...), we'd elect someone who was great, regardless of whose son or daughter or spouse they were, and we'd toss a bum out on his ear, regardless of whose child they were or whose spouse they were.
