But that would pretty much be the proverbial nail in our democracy. Instead, we'll have an absolte plutocracy (Sen. Smith, TX, Sponsered by GE, "He Brings Good Things to Life."

I think that's why he's eager (occasionally too much so) to compromise and just get something passed.

Corporations are people too. Why not cut out the middleman and elect Senator GE?

    BTW ... Nice speech.

That said, I agree with others that the Republican reaction (or lack of one) is just embarassing. Of course, if a Republican were at the podium we would see the same from the Democrats in the chamber and that is just symptomatic of the dysfunction in DC.

You've repeated this theme in several threads lately, but the equivalency just doesn't exist. Even longtime Republicans who tend to be more moderate have started to admit that the party is run by the extremists now. There are ways to measure these things, and each and every one of them demonstrates that the two parties aren't the same, and that Republicans are more at fault, particularly on obstructionism.

But, if you went back and looked at tapes of Bush's STUs you would find much the same...save for the one in '02 when there was general unity following 9/11.

I think the current batch of Republicans are largely idiots. I don't feel much better about the current batch of Democrats. The system is broken and won't be fixed until there is a clear third choice...of which the Tea Party is not.

And we wonder why people get disgusted with politics and turned off by the whole process.

I watched the SOTU. Then when it was over and they went to the hand-shaking portion, I took the dog out for his walk.

When we came back in, Daniels was halfway into his response. My husband, who wasn't familiar with Daniels and apparently missed the intro saying who he was, was literally sitting there slackjawed, and just said "Who is this dick? This is the best they could do?"

And yeah, "out of touch principal" is perfect. His tone was "I'm scolding you now, but only because I care" mixed with cluelessness about what the problem actually is, let alone how to address it.

agreed- he is engaging but yes offering up things no one can afford. But what was this really ?
It was a blatant campaign stop instead of a state of the union by Obama and a spoiled brat pout fest from the GOP> It was damn embarassing really.
U would rather have seen him call out exactly what's wrong and why it's wrong and what he's going to do ( or try to do) about it. Putting a lot of ideas out there that people will take to the polls with them- that will never be fulfilled will only serve in a re-election campaign, no real world application.

We are in such serious mud in DC I can't stand it. AS for the GOP reps there- you were put there to get things done also - look for compromises dammit and let's move things along. Each side ONLY want what they want and nothing less---and the only losers in this are the American people.

and if somehow goofball Gingrich ends up the GOP candidate- all we will do is succeed in returning to 20 years ago...Superman where are you ?
