    A more interesting fact related to George Washington is that since he was away from home so much his wife Martha Washington had to take over the responsibility of maintaining Mt Vernon. She stopped referring to Mt Vernon as "his" Plantation and started referring to Mt Vernon as "our" Plantation. Its one of the first examples of women taking a more prominent role in Colonial America.

    I read a piece many years ago (sorry if it is vague), that Washington's family left Lincolnshire (I have been to the home here) in disgrace and not very wealthy. There was an assertion in the thesis that although the wealth had developed in the new world, this was a chance to make a real name for himself and gain more power (and indeed in later life there is evidence to suggest he wanted to be Emporer, not President).
