Some crimes are becoming so brutal though that it becomes tempting to consider it. Just in the past year in the Twin Cities we've had a three year old tortured to death by her mother's boyfriend. More recently, although they survived, a woman repeatedly stabbed one of her daughters and took an axe to the other one. I could support a death penalty in cases where there was scientific proof that that the person was guilty. I've opposed the death penalty because of the fear of putting an innocent person to death. Forensic science is advancing to the point where that could be prevented.

Unfortunately, that has never prevented the Republicans from trotting it out as a "vital issue" - just remember 1988.
