But by that Christmas they were busting down the doors to get them so I was glad we missed all that. She has the little birth certificate and everything and it was a "well loved" addition to her little doll family.

    Sorry!

I never had one. They were after my time, but my kids collect them - I think we have 10 or so in the house now. We find them at the thrift store for about 50 cents each. I see some of them sell for $$$ on ebay. They're really pretty funny - if you get like 6 of them looking at each other and talking at once they'll sing songs together and tell jokes and play red light green light. When I get bored doing housework I set them all up on the kitchen table and get them going.

For the record, my kids are mad at me for finding that Furby in a microwave vid on youtube, and they've formed a "Furby's Rights" organization. I'm sure they'd let your daughter join.

IMHO, Cabbage Patch dolls are simply hideous. That commercial was funny though.

They became enormously popular through local craft shows and were the "talk". Everyone just had to have one. The original dolls are really quite something and were different from the Cabbage Patch dolls we now have. The original dolls were each handmade by Xavier and quite detailed. Many of these are in the Babyland General Hospital Museum and are worth thousands of dollars. One room in the hospital has photos and autographs lining the walls of all the celebrities who have visited Babyland General.

This is quite a "success" story of someone who had a dream of a soft sculpture doll; handmade them with so much detail and the rest is history. I'm sure there are some pics available somewhere of the original dolls. They were really neat.

Last year my sister and I were out shopping when the Care Bear revival was on.
This brought back so many childhood memories, I had to buy a Good Luck bear as I still have my original GL bear and now they sit together as friends!

I wish I knew more about that particular Cabbage Patch style...

I'm fascinated by the recent trend of bringing back all of my favorite toys from the '80s. In a way I'm enjoying it because it lets me relive my childhood, but on the other hand it just leaves me shaking my head wondering, "Are the toy companies so out of ideas that they have to recycle stuff from twenty years ago?"

I got my first CPD in 1985. I remember vividly as my mum had to put her name down on a waiting list at our local toy store and the shipment seemed to take forever to arrive. My mum had to go to the toy store hours before it opened to line up to secure my first doll.

Dznygirl - I think the revival is because all the people who loved Cabbage Patch and Care Bears when they were little have "grown up" now (okay, I'm not the best example of that!) and love buying them for their kids and friends' kids so they know the love too!
