They were more clumsy and insensitive. Gibson's comments were pre-scripted since they already had the audio from Brokeback queued up. And Gibson was clearly mocking Ledger for his work in Brokeback; it was bigotry that spurred his comments. He thought he could make fun of him for the gay cowboy movie.
