It's nice to see a president in office with a little common sense.

Good for him, not letting this stuff fall by the side, even as he wrestles with the challenges of the economy.

That's what gets me about the people who are crying today about how babies are being killed over this. Some Republican congressman, Chris something or other, went on and on about how "this isn't change" blah blah blah. These embryos were GOING TO GET DESTROYED ANYWAY. That's not baby killing? Please, just shut up.

Because make no mistake, that's where they went under Bush. (And yes, some did go to research because certain states and private entities funded the research. But federal funding means the research should advance much more quickly, AND more private entities will be able to progress as well.)

It's effectiveness and efficiency are determined by the people who run it, not the fact that it's labeled "government." When Bill Clinton was President, FEMA was an effective and respected organization that did wonders when hurricane's hit Florida. Then Seabiscuit's lawyer takes over and it all goes to hell. And considering how much they have to process and what they have to do, my experience with the Post Office and the DMV has been pretty positive. My experience with my 401K recently has not. People want premium service for nothing from their government. They whine about paying taxes and demand they get cut, then complain that the wait is too long at the DMV. Government bashing has gotten so commonplace in our country, that people do it without even thinking through what they're saying and how little sense it actually makes. Truth be told, government works pretty well when competent people are in charge. And that transcends political party - Utah's Republican governor is no dummy and a savvy leader. But only one party is always trashing government and telling us what a problem it is. Then why on earth do people like Bobby Jindal go into it? If he hates government and loves capitalism so much, he can go work on Wall Street or for a corporation, or go back to performing exorcisms on people having seizures. Let people who actually think government can work run the government. What a novel concept that is.
