"The longtime feud between Ald. Dick Mell (33rd) and his son-in-law, Gov. Blagojevich, also surfaced on national television during the governor's appearance.

The governor's wife was set to appear on the show with her husband as part of his national media blitz timed to coincide with the start of his Illinois Senate impeachment trial, which begins at noon. "Just yesterday, she cancelled on the advice of her family. . . . Your wife's family doesn't seem to be crazy about you," Walters said.

Blagojevich blamed the bad blood with Mell on his decision to temporarily close a landfill owned by a relative of his wife's, Frank Schmidt, shortly after the governor took office in his first term. He claimed on the program that Mell "was involved with" the landfill, which the governor said had been violating state environmental standards.

Mell long has denied any ownership interest in the landfill. "

Mell is an old school Daley Machine politician here - they all have 'interests' so to speak.

I don't know of him much past the recent events, but he looks insane.

I still don't know why he is missing from his own trial.

This is one thing in which he is absolutely correct - the chance for anything approaching a fair trial is zero here. Not sure I agree with him not beinghere but it surely won't affect the outcome. They voted 117 - 1 to impeach him ( hold the trial)- his sister inlaw the lone dissenting vote

he's always been a little odd- but lately I sense more than oddity - he has almost completely left this planet.

however there are some pols here better hope they declare him unfit - indeed lots of talk about heading that way - as he has lots of dirt on lots of crooks here.....many are likely very nervous

Is there a provision under Illinois law to declare him mentally disabled? Get him suspended from office temporarily, pending psychiatric treatment? Assuming that's what's really going on?
