Nobody outside of a handful of military personnel have even been admitted inside the building. In the interim, fort knox has moved into "myths and legends" status among our culture. Those gold deposits in there belong to "we the people" and we'd like to see it. It's a huge curiosity factor - imagine hearing that Obama was going to speak tonight on the state of the economy. yeah, great. Now instead imagine hearing that Obama was going to open the vaults of fort knox - that's appointment television with instant global interest. Once the curiosity factor has been satisfied, it's a tangible reminder that our currency is based on something real - and beautiful. And that we're still a wealthy country with significant assets. And that it's all still present and accounted for and wasn't pilfered by the outgoing administration. If the purpose of his speech is to restore confidence in our economy, this would be a fine way to do it. And the best part is that this costs pretty much nothing. It's a powerful visual tool that's just sitting there waiting for someone to exploit it. An added plus is that the gold color would be complementary to Obama's creamy coffee skin tone. It beats blue drapes.
