Gig Harbor school security video use limited after flap over girls' kiss

GIG HARBOR, Wash. - Restrictions on the use of security videotape have been tightened at a suburban Tacoma high school after images of two girls kissing were shown to the parents of one of the girls, officials say.

Keith Nelson, dean of students at Gig Harbor High School, said he saw the students kissing and holding hands in the school's busy commons, checked a surveillance camera and showed the parents the tape because they had asked him a few weeks earlier to alert them to any conduct by their daughter that was out of the ordinary.

They then transferred their daughter to a school outside the Peninsula School District, which lies northwest of Tacoma.

What this article doesn't say, but was mentioned on the tv newscast, was that the parents of one of the girls put her into a school that claims to cure homosexuality. "Six weeks, six months, whatever it takes" is what the father said. He also called homosexuality an abomination.

So, there are a few issues at work here. Should the school have outed the girl to her family? Should parents be able to have their children spied on even when they aren't breaking any laws? Should parents be allowed to force their children in these sorts of programs?

Sure. As long as they don't call the kid any names.

Welllll... I certainly don't think it helps them grow up any. Here's what I am wondering: what led those parents to ask the school to watch out for "out of the ordinary" conduct?

    >Should parents be allowed to force their children in these sorts of programs?<

Parents should be warned that anyone claiming they can cure homosexuality is either deluded, or a charlatan. One should not turn one's children over the the care of deluded people or charlatans.

Yeah, that's what I wondered too. They probably figured she was gay and wanted some sort of proof. :-(

Oh brother. Whether they are gay or not, have these people not seen teenage girls together. Holding hands, hugging, arms around eachother is pretty darn common.

Thankfully, the school feels that they made a mistake and hopefully won't make it again.

It's important to stop the gayness right away. There's so much evidence that forcing people to pretend to be what they're not ultimately leads to happiness and fulfillment.

That is, provided not all her adult relatives are as moronic as her parents. I can't begin to express how utterly stupid I think these parents are, and how they should have al their children removed from them if there are others. An insightful, statement, actually. Those railing against Baldwin's moment of poor judgment and loss of temper don't seem to be as keen to denounce these parents for what amounts to psychological abuse, that they themselves have admitted will continue for as long as it takes.
