Consider modern cars, and how much more durable and reliable they are compared to cars built 50 years ago, in spite of the fact that they are much lighter and hence "flimsier" than good old 1950's Detroit Iron. I am not trying to knock Mr. Gurr. His methodolgy was probably the right one for the DL monorail. But I would not want to fly on a commercial jet airliner that was designed in such an ad hoc manner.
