Since the above is a subscription site and since I can't seem to find this story elsewhere, let me summarize. This story is very convoluted, and almost sounds like it's a fictional plot for a suspense movie.

Here are the facts as presented in the story:

    - An off-duty Hong Kong police officer, currently stationed at the HK Disneyland police post, attracts the attention of two on-duty officers in a pedestrian underpass in Tsim Sha Tsui.

    - The on-duty officers try to search him, probably not knowing that he's a fellow officer.

    - The off-duty officer pulls out a gun and starts shooting, killing one of the on-duty officers and seriously wounding the other.

    - The on-duty officers return fire, killing the off-duty officer before falling themselves.

    - One of the on-duty officers manages to send a radio distress call before collapsing. Responding officers find three bodies in the tunnel, two of them dead, and evidence of an obvious gunfight. They are probably quite surprised to find that the third party is also an officer.

    - As if this isn't strange enough, the gun used by the off-duty officer was one stolen from the person of an on-duty officer killed five years ago.

So, what do we have here? A very convoluted case. A very interesting case. A very tragic case. By the looks of it, there's a dead officer that killed another officer and wounded a third with a gun that had been stolen from yet another officer that was killed five years ago.

A couple more points: When I said "HKDL police officer" in the subject, I of course mean a member of the regular Hong Kong police force, not someone employed by Disneyland. Disney of course does not have its own sworn police officers at HKDL or anywhere else as far as I know.

Also, in Hong Kong, guns are exceedingly rare outside of on-duty police. Unlike the United States, even most police officers in HK are not allowed to carry their duty weapons or any other weapons while off-duty, so it's exceedingly rare for someone other than an on-duty officer to be in lawful possession of a gun, even if they are a cop.

It's possible that there's been a very disturbed individual on duty within the HK police force, and he's been stationed at HKDL. Not that I think this reflects poorly on the HK police, HK in general, or HKDL, but it does make for fascinating reading. And it's certainly a good thing that he didn't "go postal" while on duty at the HKDL police post.

This makes it all the more unusual to hear about it happening in Hong Kong. I feel sorry for all those involved.

Not trying to make light on this subject, but it has all the makings of a good crime novel ;).
