No, the first one was not restored, at least nowhere near the extent that the platinum edition was. There is a very distinct difference, so if you own the old copy, the new one is much, much improved. Also, I wondered what the cats were doing while the rat got in. I'd never really noticed how beautiful the film is - the character animation is perfect and the backgrounds are as beautiful as anything else Disney has done. I was really struck by the scene where Jim Dear and Darling get off the streetcar when the dog pound wagon is in front of their house. It's night time, and the streets are shimmering with water. Absolutely stunning. And the animation of the two of them running up their walk into their house is great. This movie moved itself into one of my top five favorite Disney animated films last night. Great story, beautifully drawn.
