Some folks may have seen my post about going to South Dakota to pick up a fur-baby last Friday. It was a beautiful 3 year old female Yorkie named Dixie.

We got Dixie home and she was just a delight! She was probably the calmest, best-behaved dog I've ever seen... even in unfamiliar surroundings.

She seemed to bond quickly with my wife and followed her around like a shadow. When my wife had to go to the store Dixie stood by the front door and waited for her to return. She was the sweetest little thing you ever saw.

But our joy was short lived. My wife has always been extremely allergic to cats and dogs. She heard that Yorkies might be OK for people with allergies and she had always wanted one. But even with taking Claritin my wife was so choked up by Sunday morning that she was having a hard time breathing and had to use an inhaler.

It was clear that Dixie was not going to work out. It maybe would have worked if my wife never held her or slept in the same room with her, but she could not imagine having Dixie around and not being able to hold her.

So after bunches of tears we were on our way back to South Dakota on Sunday to return our sweet Dixie. Our time with her had been very sweet, but unbearably short.

My wife was really bummed. It is amazing how quickly you can get attached to a dog, and she really did. Of course in this case it was not only the attachment to Dixie, but the realization that she would never be able to fulfill what had been a life-long dream.

So we went out to dinner last night and talked and decided there was only one thing that could put her in a better mood...

    WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!!

I was able to find a Studio at Saratoga Springs and airfare at a pretty decent price for February 10 - 14. A great little valentine's present if I say so myself.

So... a major disappointment followed by an unexpected pleasure. Pretty much how life goes I guess.

    :)

You may recall we adopted two American Eskimo dogs a couple years ago. After the male nipped at my 5 year old neice, and then later nipped at me, we had to take him back to the rescue.

It had only been a month, but I had really bonded to that boy dog.

It was the right thing to do.

Anyway, I feel your pain and send good vibes to you and your wife.

    Enjoy The Mouse!

You guys have fun at Disney World! That kind of goes without saying though.

Have a great time at WDW. (Even though it isn't the HAPPIEST place on earth!)

Perhaps not, but it is the place where I can get lodging for the fewest DVC points!!

I was going to suggest the same thing, as they have wool rather than hair - assuming it's the hair your wife's allergic to.

Have a great time at WDW!

Canine Partners uses poodles for people with breathing problems. Even my friend who ended up having sinus cancer was fine with her standard sized poodle.

My son takes allergy shots so he could be with out Lab. It's been almost two years and so far, so good :)

I also have pretty bad allergies and need quite a bit of time with each new animal in the house before they stop, it's not a pleasant time. Dogs or cats can't ever be on my bed or in my face but they get plenty of hugs and scratches, I just need to wash my hands right after as if I touch my eyes, my lids puff up. I've never had a reaction quite like your wifes though, she must have felt awful in all kinds of ways.

    Have a wonderful vacation!

I'm sure you guys have already researched hypo-allergenic dogs, but here's a link just in case you decided to give doggie love another chance. :)

A dog is a long term commitment.
This Dixie obviously took to Trippy's wife and is now back looking for a new home, probably confused as to what she did wrong.

Roadtrip has not mentioned getting another dog and I think this is the smart thing to do, for the time being.

    Ps...Congrats Mele...what kind of dog?

Dixie was in our home less than 48 hours. We were very conscious of the potential impact on her which is why we returned her so quickly. Others were advising us to keep her and see if things would work out if my wife got allergy shots, etc.

We didn't want to do that because there was no guarantee that allergy shots would work and if we had to return Dixie after more time it would have been harder for both her and us.

Dixie went back to the woman who had her from the time she was born. I'm sure she is very happy now and looked at her short time with us as a road trip and nothing else.

    :)
