I think they should wait until all the court challenges are dealt with.

"Proposition 8 must be invalidated because the amendment process cannot be used to extinguish fundamental constitutional rights without compelling justification," Brown said in a written statement. Rick Jacobs, founder and chair of the anti-Proposition 8 Courage Campaign, said he was "appalled" that the initiative's supporters wanted to nullify the same-sex marriages that are already on the books. "The motivation behind this mean-spirited and heart-breaking action should not be allowed to be buried in legal brief," he said. "If Proposition 8's sponsors plan to destroy lives, they should at least have the courage to admit it publicly." The gall displayed here is simply a new low. From a legal standpoint, it's not been done, to my limited knowledge. My first reaction is those who are favor of erasing all the previously enacted, lawful same sex marriages can go to hell, and I'll drive them there. It's also my second, third and fourth reaction. The only word to describe their attitude is hate. Pure, unadulterated red hot hate. The lack of compassion evident leads one to no other conclusion. It isn't enough to try and ban them going forward, but now they want to drive a stake, literally and figuratively, through the hearts of gays. If people though it was ugly before, Yes on 8 people now will have only themselves to blame for whatever happens next. Unbelievable.

To all you Prop 8 supporters, especially the ones behind this new initiative. You do not know what human compassion is. You do not understand that people are people and while you may disagree with thier life's path, they are entitled to it. All people have the capacity for love, why are you dwelling on hate. Allow these lawfully wedded couples their happiness, it does *nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING* to your happiness.

And all this "forcing people to recognize gay marriage" is just crap. And subsitute a word that rhymes spit. How about looking the other way? Turn the other cheek? Hypocritical religious bigots.

He knows right from wrong. As do 48% of the California electorate. We cannot simply throw equality under the bus in the interests of appeasing the hatred, fear and ignorance of the other 52. We can only hope that they'll one day come to understand. Jerry Brown for Governor 2010.

This moves the whole to discussion from preventing marriages to actively dissolving unions that were legal just a few weeks ago. What other rights could be retroactively removed by the tyranny of the (narrow) majority?

Originally Posted By gadzuux What would motivate an individual to actively seek to nullify the marriages of over 36,000 people? Simple - fear and loathing - the basest of all human instincts. These people live their lives ruled by their fears. And these fears are deftly manipulated by those to whom they voluntarily grant authority over them - their churches. For them, it provides the safety of the flock. Often, people who may seem to have an inferiority complex really are inferior. They cannot compete as an individual and they cannot effectively deal with this increasingly complex world by their own wits. Instead they search for emotional shelter and easy answers, and the church provides them both. In this case, the pastors tell the faithful that these aren't "real" marriages, and the people in them aren't capable of being a "real" married couple, therefore their vows mean nothing. This isn't confined to just gay marriage. The catholic church has been carrying on a sham for thousands of years called "annulment" where if you pay enough money and jump through enough hoops - *poof* - not only are you no longer married, you NEVER WERE! It's actually back-dated so that your lifelong commitment to your marriage and your partner never happened. And incredibly, some people actually believe it. And of course we've recently sifted through the appalling hypocrisy of the LDS church telling us that they are the vanguard of "traditional marriage values" while conveniently forgetting the entire history of their own faith and persecution. So in a very real way, it's the churches that are destroying marriage, all the while thinking that they're "defending" it. These people are worse than useless - their own delusions of grandeur are increasingly detrimental to the rest of society as a whole. They'll tell you chapter and verse about all the 'good works' they perform. But it's a small tradeoff compared to the damage that they inflict on the culture, and the ignorance and superstition that they continue to foster.
