Group Asks Calif. Gov. to Return Donation

SACRAMENTO, Calif. Oct 10, 2005 — A watchdog group is calling on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign to return a $105,000 donation from the insurance industry that came the same day he vetoed a bill the group opposed. A spokesman for Schwarzenegger said the timing was a coincidence.

The American Insurance Association donated the money Friday, the day Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that would have forced insurers to pay medical costs when people covered by Medi-Cal are injured in an accident caused by an insured driver.

The watchdog group, Santa Monica-based Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights, said such payments amount to $225 million a year.

"He puts politics above the needs of taxpayers. This bill would have alleviated $225 million of taxpayer waste every year," Doug Heller, executive director of the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights, said Monday.

Nope, this is not what Arnold is about at all. He is FOR the people.

Boy, if only insurance companies paid their claims that efficiently, huh?

BTW, a pledging is a common practice in politics so I don't think the timing has anything to do with the ethic here. It would seem just as wrong before or after the veto.
