I try to think about the country's history during the song. I recently met a couple of Rosie the Riveters. They're still around and have amazing stories to tell. So they're the sort of people I think about as I listen to the lyrics. I also think about the people who have fought hard for civil rights and equality, a job not yet finished for sure. I'm not very serious for about 99% of my waking hours. But during the National Anthem, it's one of the times I am.

I actually played the NA on my instrument, every morning, over the school's PA system while in grade school. So, I forget a word, I just the sing the name of the musical notes out loud for that section of NA (eg C, C, C, B A-flat, A-flat).

It's a really weird tradition. That said, I'm all for symbolic acts of patriotism. It's just when they're so frequent and ritualistic they kind of lose their meaning.
