For me, it's definately the smell of turning on the heat in the house for the first time. There's something about it that just gets me in the mood. Right up there is also the scent of a real pine tree, and decorating it while The Wizard of Oz is on TV (the last 5 or 6 years it's just randomly been on while I've been decorating, I think it's on TBS or something...random coincidence). Sitting in front of a fire and listening to the crackle. Smelling the fields of tobacco drying while walking the dog on a cool, crisp night (when I lived in NC). Shivering in the car while the heater blows on high warming everything up, but is really just as cold as outside is another. But the one that really tops the list (and is in the song, which got me thinking) are the colorful shadows on the ceiling above the tree. The way the branches and lights mix just says to me, "Hey, it's Christmas!" What tells you it's time?

Lyrics to Somewhere in My Memory:

    "Candles in the window,
    shadows painting the ceiling,
    gazing at the fire glow,
    feeling that gingerbread feeling.
    Precious moments,
    special people,
    happy faces,
    I can see.

    Somewhere in my mem'ry,
    Christmas joys all around me,
    living in my mem'ry,
    all of the music,
    all of the magic,
all of the fam'ly home here with me."
