I'm not going to lie I LOVE the original Tron, and I really wanted to like this movie. As I heard people talk about bad to mediocre reviews I started questioning if Tron 2 would be everything I thought it would be. Go watch this film. Seriously now... off the chair/stool/ground/etc. Grab your keys and go. This will be the first film since the Dark Knight that I will go see multiple times in theaters. I had a blast at the midnight showing. I took my younger brother and two of his friends. They enjoyed the movie without having seen the first film (Although they may be disappointed in it now) So I can see why Disney is waiting to re-release Tron. I highly recommend this film.

It wasn't quite what I expected, but I'm not really sure what that was either. I saw the original many years ago on DVD and remember it vaguely, but I wasn't terribly impressed. I'm planning on watching it this weekend, and then seeing the new one on Monday, so we'll see if my opinion changes. I guess I wasn't expecting it to be such a clear good vs evil story line. Since the original was much more about a journey and experiences along the way (at least from what I remember of it), this is quite different. It worked well, so I'm not complaining, it just wasn't what I was expecting, at all. The pacing of the film seemed to have some issues for me. The first hour was pretty slow, and there really wasn't much explained. Once the Flynns met up, it picked up and really got in its groove quite nicely. I was a little disappointed that the ending wasn't more fulfilling (I was expecting another 40 minutes when it turned out to be 5 minutes from the end), but I guess they had to leave room for sequels. It's a strong enough ending, I just feel that there were fairly important things that weren't clearly resolved. That may have been because I didn't understand the visuals, or because they were intentionally vague, but it just seemed to wrap up way too quickly. I really enjoyed the music. It's unlike any other feature I've ever seen, but it fits so well. It's a strange cross between techno and a score, and it manages to really fit the feeling of the film. There were a couple times where it was less techno for the softer moments, so those kind of stood out, but I thought that they were some of the better moments in the film. The actors all did a really good job. People had complained that Garrett Hedlund looked too stiff in the preview scenes, but in context it all made sense. I kind of liked how he just had to figure things out on his own, since that's very similar to how most people actually use computers and new programs. Clever! The look of the film was incredible. Even in the 'real world' scenes, the colors were very controlled, and it all worked together to make a cohesive feel. I expect that it will be winning visual awards in a few months. It also didn't hurt that all of the actors were pretty too! And maybe I'm just reading too much into things, but did anybody else see some kind of intense religious undertones? Overall, I really enjoyed the film. My biggest concern is that the pacing was off in the first half and the ending isn't as satisfying as if could be, but overall it's really good. I'm interested to see it again, especially with the original fresh in my mind. I expect that this film could be the escape that people are looking for this holiday season.

I got in my theater about 30 minutes before it started, and had a tough time finding a decent seat, and that was with just one of me in one of the biggest theaters I've ever seen. When it was over, the lobby (which is pretty big to begin with) was packed people who had just gotten out, standing around. And that was at a theater with 22 screens, and another theater across the parking lot had 30. Just up the road a couple miles, there are theaters with 12 and 6 screens. If they were able to get that many people at the one, I suspect it will have a fairly healthy opening.
Originally Posted By Longhorn12 >intense religious undertones< Can't find the article, but Jeff Bridges has said the movie is about religion. >the theater I was at was full< Same here. It was packed. Almost no one had food/drinks either everyone was just watching. It reminded me a lot of when I saw Phantom Menace opening night. I saw it in 3D, and I really enjoyed the "Wizard of Oz" stunt they pulled. Where the real world is in 2d and once you hit the grid BAM! 3D! >I really enjoyed the music.< I've been listening to the soundtrack since it came out, and it's wonderful. I expected techno-only coming from Daft Punk but I think they did a wonderful job. I can't really think of ANYTHING they have done that I don't like though. Seeing them in the movie was great as well.

It will be interesting to see how it plays to women. I would have thought that teenagers and young men would have been a lock.

And DD pointed out Clu picking up the crystal apple as he remembered his creation. Very interesting stuff!

My 25 yo son and my daughter's 21 yo boyfriend both thought it was great...including the music. The women all went to see a different movie. I'd estimate 5-10 % were women in our 7 PM showing. Hope the movie does well, but the Pirates 4 preview looked absolutely terrible. Depp is getting old....

My fujitsu friend, Mikey (7.5 years old, a year younger than I was when I saw the original) and I LOVED it. It was so awesome. the Wizard of Oz pastiche, the design, the philosophy, the 80's and Star Wars references, I LOVED it all. I have not been this stoked about a Disney film since perhaps Tarzan. I loved it and cannot wait to see it again. It even made me shed a little tear. Two thumbs way up, but I am sure it will be a love it or hate it film with very little in between. And it was great to see how Disney can still do masculine, even if it is rare these days. Also loved the look of the Narnia trailer and Gullivers Travels. PotC looks ok. But the real wooooaaa for us was the Disney TRON castle in 3D, beautiful.

I have been worried about this film for a couple of years-- that it wouldn't live up to the original, or worse, that it would! I really like TRON:Legacy. It was much, much better than I anticipated. But I can also see how it may not find an audience. That would be a shame, as I believe it could spawn a good franchise. In fact, I can see the elements for the next TRON, assuming this one justifies it. Sam Flynn is clearly coming back to Encom, which sets up a conflict with Dillinger's son, Edward. (Who knew he was in the picture?) The unbilled performer is Cillian Murphy of 28 Days Later, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception and others. Clearly, he's there to play a bigger role in the "next" film. Further, in the Grid, we never did see Zuse and Gem's ultimate fate-- just the two of them looking tense, then an exterior shot of the destruction of the End of Line. And I could swear there was a closeup shot of an individual "soldier" in Clu's army who was, indeed, Gem. Beau Garrett has been given a LOT of publicity for this film-- and Michael Sheen's character was too fun to throw away so quickly. They could easily be comic villains in the next film, aiding or opposing whatever program Edward Dillinger cooks up. I want to see more!

The original was ALL about good vs. evil. So much so that it's seems almost quaint today. Good guy Jeff Bridges must battle bad guy David Warner, in the boardroom and in the Grid-- where Warner is personified as the ultra-evil Master Control Program (and SARK). We had a TRON (1982) viewing party a week ago. I was surprised at how well the original held up. And it was definitely a help in watching the new one. The name "Dillinger" sent a little ripple of recognition through three people in our row! (Warner's real life counterpart was Ed Dillinger. His son "Edward Dillinger" is on the board of the present day Encom.)

I'm sure the movie would have been fun even without seeing the original, but it really did make it that much more exciting to pick out all the homages to the original film! Like "Now that's a BIG door!!" ;-)
