There is some question as to whether the mo-capped Beowulf can get in under the rules as they stand now, and I'm also saying "hmmmm" to Alvin and the Chipmunks, which may have too much live action. There will be three nominees. In case you're wondering, Tekkonkinkreet is a pretty good but very violent anime feature (available now on DVD) and Persepolis is a French arthouse film, an autobiography of an Iranian cartoonist who grew up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution (nationwide theatrical release on Christmas Day). I know you probably don't want to hear this, but I think Persepolis has a **very** good shot at beating Ratatouille - it is a brilliant movie. It's also been submitted for Best Foreign Film. Gee, I wonder what happened to "The Ten Commandments"? ;-)

For now, "Ratatouille", which has been seen and reviewed by all the critics, is the "best reviewed movie of the year SO FAR".

I have NOT seen "Persepolis" yet--but I have read the book & its sequel, and I'd say if the movie hews as close as I hear it does in style & substance, it will be Art and the worthy winner.

Hopefully, though, I'll be wrong because I absolutely loved Ratatouille.

It's Amy from the Adams Fam'ly that might be up fer an Oscar the Grouch--not that prissy little Giz-smell thing!!!

Lilo and Stitch (a movie that can't seem to catch a break) got knocked off by Spirited Away, which is the movie that gets my vote for "best of the past decade." BTW, I was so glad they went with the "right" three films for a change, that I failed to notice the other big Disney Oscar news, and it's bad: No Amy Adams for Best Actress ... And no "How To Hook Up Your Home Theater" in Best Animated Short. The nominees there are: I Met the Walrus (loopy B&W line-drawing animation to go with a tape of a guy talking about meeting John Lennon) Madame Tutli-Putli (stop-motion with creepy real human eyes superimposed, a sort of gothic horror thing about a woman riding a haunted train) And 3 I haven't seen: Meme les Pigeons vont au Paradis (Even Pigeons Go to Heaven) My Love (Moya Lyubov) Peter and the Wolf I'll be seeing that last one in a few minutes, as can you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =BaJ5oTi0_xg
