also one by us had a buffett counter where you would get a meatloaf meal - with mashed potatoes, gravy, peas and a soda for like $1.25.

    Cylindrical shaped scoops of course.

Thrifty was acquired by Rite-Aid. I just read on Wiki that:

"The Thrifty name and logo live on at Rite Aid, as Thrifty Ice Cream is still sold in the West Coast Rite Aid locations. The Thrifty brand of ice cream was retained because it had won several important awards in its history"

In my teens, I would get a dimes worth at the candy counter before going to a movie. Twice as much candy as you could get in the theater for that price.

I was living in Honolulu when they closed all Woolworths. The one downtown was a huge multi-storied building.

    I miss them.

I remember the old 5 and dime (Woolworths). I remember a couple of them in L.A. I think you could actually see one in passing on Pee Wee's Big Adventure. I also miss Fedco. Target now resides in their locations.

The ghost of Woolworths lives on in the United States. Before the chain closed the last of its original retail stores in the late 1990s, it had opened various specialty stores under other names. One, a sporting goods retailer, still operates. The name? Foot Locker.

I forget what my husband was looking for, but he asked me where I would find something while we were at JoAnns. When I answered, "on the notions wall." He looked at me like I had 2 heads.

It wasn't Walmart that killed our Woolworths, it was when our city got a mall.
