Jamie had been dealing with a mysterious swelling in her lower abdomen for a couple of weeks. She had been to see a couple of her doctors, and was waiting for results. That morning we decided a trip to the emergency room was in order. But first, Jamie insisted on taking paperwork to an early morning meeting. After the meeting, Jamie had a coworker drive her to the hospital. On the way, she passed out. Fortunately, they arrived at the emergency room right away. As the EMTs were working to revive her, Jamie went into cardiac arrest. But her heart was started again immediately. Jamie was moved up to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, where CT scans were performed. It was determined that Jamie was in better shape than she appeared. I stayed the night with her, as our daughter was away on a visit and our son stayed with friends. (He did come to the hospital to see his mom, though.) By Saturday morning Jamie had made some progress. They were able to remove her breathing tube (nasty thing!) and Jamie had a couple of visits from friends. Sunday was Mother's Day. Both of the kids came up to SICU, and then Jamie had a couple of short visits with friends. Remarkably, that evening Jamie was released to telemetry, to a very nice private room. The next few days were occupied with tests and a couple of surgical procedures. Jamie's heart has always been a source of concern, as there is a family history. It was determined that Friday's cardiac arrest was not caused by her heart, however, but rather by the swelling. It seems that her blood thinners had become dangerously high, and her blood was seeping and settling. This in turn brought on anemia and swelling. It was finally too much for her system. The good news is that Jamie's cardiologist went ahead with a procedure that Jamie had been needing for some time. On Wednesday they implanted a combination pacemaker and defibrillator. Already her heart is beating more regularly than it has in years! On Thursday she was released from the hospital. Now we need to let Jamie recuperate, and then find out exactly what we need to do about the swelling. There is good news about that, too: Since Jamie's blood thinners have been brought back up, the swelling has stopped, and has even reversed slightly. Jamie is thankful for all her friends here on LP-- and so appreciates all the thoughts and prayers. I thank you, too.
