It hit me like a bolt of lightening out of a clear blue sky... the "Aha Moment" I had avoided all these years and didn't really want to have. We were walking through Epcot when my wife indicated (as she does frequently ;-) ) that she would like to use the restroom. I said "Let's go to the American Adventure -- the restrooms there are usually pretty clean". Well, this time they weren't. But what struck me more was that I made a comment about trying to find a clean restroom in the first place. It may be a small thing, but that is one of the things that most blew us away about WDW in 1991... ALL of the restrooms were squeaky-clean. We used to joke about how the floors were so clean you could eat your lunch off them. Now I do everything I can to keep my pants from touching the floor when I sit on a toilet in one. So although I've said in the past that I think The Spirit, TDLFAN, and vbdad are usually fair in their assessments, this is the first time I've truly "felt their pain". It wasn't fun. Overall the restrooms at EPCOT seemed in mediocre condition at best (except for the one in Morocco, which was very clean). The restrooms at Magic Kingdom ranged from very good to poor; and the restrooms at Animal Kingdom and the MGM Studios were generally in pretty good condition. The restroom Hall of Shame award goes to the restroom in the Poly across from ‘Ohana. It has been a mess every time I’ve been there for several years now, and this year was no different; it was simply disgusting. Sure, I realize it is in a high-traffic area and gets a lot of use. All the more reason why it should be kept squeaky clean. It is a high visibility location in one of WDW’s premier hotels. You would think they would try to keep it nice. Well; enough toilet talk and on to better things… The Resorts: The Boardwalk looked as good as I’ve ever seen it look. One day as we left our room they were repainting the white trim in the hall… trim that to my eyes looked pretty good to start with. The whole resort was in better shape than I could have expected. Saratoga Springs was a far nicer resort than I’d been led to believe by negative comments I’ve read. I thought the rooms were well designed, had furnishings that seemed quite upscale compared to other DVC resorts, and had excellent facilities. With a table service restaurant, counter service restaurant, bar complete with pool table, and a full-service spa, I thought the facilities were better than at any DVC resort I’ve visited. I believe The Spirit has commented favorably on this resort, and I would have to agree. We were impressed enough that we added 115 Saratoga Springs points to the 200 points we have at The Boardwalk. The Restaurants: My wife was disappointed with the shrinking menu at Spoodles; especially the virtual elimination of Tapas. On the other hand, my Portuguese Seafood Stew was the most delicious meal I’ve ever had at a Disney restaurant!! Spoodles definitely stays on my list of must-do Disney Restaurants. We also had the good experience we’ve come to expect at the Biergarten. For years we never tried this place, somewhat scared away by the prospect of communal seating at long tables and the ease with which German food can be made poorly. We had nothing to fear on either account. Sitting with others is actually quite fun most of the time and the food is EXTREMERLY food. My wife grew up on REAL German cooking – her mother’s parents were immigrants to America from Germany. The food at Biergarten was very comparable to what my wife grew up on. Since her mother died about 5 years ago, the food here always brings back precious memories. We were rather disappointed by the Kona Café at the Poly. Last year we tried it for the first time and thought it was a good alternative to ‘Ohana. Now I’m not so sure. The food this time seemed rather average for the cost and the service was only fair. Our waitress seemed to have no idea that an empty drink glass might mean you want another one. And it’s not like we had too many… we were only able to flag her down for a refill once during our time there. A major disappointment was Alfredo’s at Epcot. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. After two disappointing tries this place is PERMANENTLY off our list. The tables are ridiculously close together, the place is LOUD, and our dinners were quite expensive for the marginal quality. After our poor experience there the last time we were hesitant to go, but friends we were with really wanted to try the place. I figured that we could always order Spaghetti with Meatballs – no one ever seems able to mess that up too badly. Unfortunately there was no spaghetti, with meatballs or otherwise, on the menu. My wife had Osso Buco which did not compare well at all with the Osso Buco she’d been served at other restaurants. Among other things, why did they use a pork shank instead of a veal shank for the dish? Is this a case of Political Correctness gone wild? The hell with PETA… proper Osso Buco is made with VEAL! My lamb roast was also a disappointment. I had a lamb shank dinner on Amtrak on the way home which was FAR superior to my meal at Alfredo’s. Nuff said. The major surprise food-wise this trip was the EXCELLENT meal we had from the Tangierine Café – the counter service place at Morocco. My wife had had a Schawarma Platter with Chicken and I had one with Lamb. Both were outstanding and a worthy alternative to table service meals at Epcot. The Attractions: We thought that The Seas with Nemo and Friends was a much needed addition to what was previously a pretty dead Living Seas attraction in recent years. It is a very enjoyable dark ride that I found quite creative. I still have no idea how they do the effect at the end. This addition, along with Soarin’ has brought much needed life to that side of Future World. The changes to Pirates were also a plus, though we’d previously seen them at Disneyland. In my opinion WDW benefited more from the changes because it was not as good an attraction as DL’s was originally. (Does that make any sense to anyone besides me?) We were disappointed by mechanical breakdowns while riding Buzz Lightyear and the Carousel of Progress; as well as technical problems causing the cancellation of Finding Nemo – The Musical at the Animal Kingdom. Hopefully this was a rare string of bad luck and not an ongoing problem of poor attraction maintenance. Disney would never let that happen, I’m sure. ;-) So, that’s it… the good and the bad. I’ve saved the ugly for last. Indiana Jones was closed the entire day we were at MGM Studios because some cheerleader thing was using it for the day. That was absolutely unforgivable in my book. With Rock N Rollercoaster already down for rehab, the Animation Building a shadow of its former self and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire completely closed; taking a major show off-line for a private group is just not “good showâ€. God, there I said it. I always swore I would never use that term. Oh well… they REALLY deserved it this time! If they are just going to give me half a park, I want some of my money back. We saw everything there in about four hours. :-( Overall, WDW vacations are still the most enjoyable vacations we ever take. I’m sure that opinion will not change for years to come. But this time I saw that it ain’t all perfect in WDW land. See what my crummy board friends have done to me?? LOL

One of the best dining experiences I've ever had at WDW was the first time Eric & I dined at Alfredo's - INCREDIBLE service, and great, great food. We went back this past fall and yeah, it's a bit loud, but wasn't so loud that I had trouble hearing Eric, and I consider that to say a lot since I'm partially deaf and also have trouble separating sounds I hear sometimes. Anyhow, I'm sorry to hear you won't be returning to Alfredo's, as I really, really like it! "We saw everything there in about four hours. :-( " Yeah, that sounds about right. Muppets, ToT a couple/few times,a nd a spin on RnRC if there's no line is a complete day at the Studios for me. Anyhow, thanks for sharing your impressions, Trippy! Glad you had a good trip overall and also glad that maybe you can understand where some of our other posters are coming from a bit better now that you've walked a mile in their shoes, so to speak.

Perhaps in the future I should maybe just go with the Lobster Bisque and an appetizer sized Fettuccine for myself -- that would be a nice meal at a decent cost. I would have to find something for my wife though to get her to try it again. The slow-roasted chicken dish sounds good... maybe she would like that. Thanks for the response!

If it's any consolation know that I take no joy about you seeing what I've seen. <<Overall the restrooms at EPCOT seemed in mediocre condition at best (except for the one in Morocco, which was very clean). While they have me 'blackballed' for life because some folks at Disney fear me, I'm sure a nice, mild-mannered, Minnesota DVCer might get taken more seriously (although I wouldn't bet on it). Of course, my advice is always to take it to the top. If you have a problem with Epcot's restrooms, you contact Brad Rex. All of Disney parks ... Erin Wallace and/or Meg Crofton. The Poly? whoever is GM there etc ... Guest relations is a complete, total and utter waste of time. <<Well; enough toilet talk and on to better things…>> We could do a toilet talk thread ... seriously, have you seen my thread 'Fodder for KCBS?' on the DL Board about a restroom situation at DL I experienced? I'd like your take on it, if you get a minute. <<The Resorts: The Boardwalk looked as good as I’ve ever seen it look. I really was VERY pleasantly surprised by SS and would and will likely stay again in the future. The thing that really turned me off in advance were the outdoor motel-like corridors ... but once there, they didn't bother me so much. The decor of the rooms is very nice. Locations is excellent and peaceful ... as is the whole feel of the resort ... and I love the food offerings at both Artist's Palatte and Turf Club. And the spa is great too. I must admit I don't understand why people, especially DVCers, bash the place vs. say the Beach Club Villas, which are already dirty and in disrepair. <<The Restaurants: My wife was disappointed with the shrinking menu at Spoodles; especially the virtual elimination of Tapas. Key word being 'used' ... first in 2001 they dropped lunch service, which was my fave WDW resort lunch spot. The menu, which was once vast, has been dumbed down to almost nothing. Five entrees. <<We also had the good experience we’ve come to expect at the Biergarten. I like the food a lot, the desserts are great and the dining room is usually peaceful, at least for lunch. I have never had a bad servere there, but I know of another LP.er that has ... and she'll likely weigh in. But when I have bad service, I let it be known that it isn't acceptable ... I'm sure that shocks you enough to melt the snow you're covered in ;-) <<A major disappointment was Alfredo’s at Epcot. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I have had nothing but good experiences with Alfredo's ... the last two have been excellent. And they have expanded to having (or at least did last month) a REAL MENU ... LIKE WITH PAGES!!! I had some kind of chicken parm type dish that was wonderful. I guess it goes to show that you can have vastly different experiences at the same place. I do agree with you about the tables, though. I got up from a meal there about two years ago and started taking my table's table-cloth and the folks next to me with me ... (no fat jokes, please, you old Viking!) ... they definitely have too many tables in the place likely due to the desire of most Americans to eat what they view as 'safe, comfort' food while at WDW. <<The major surprise food-wise this trip was the EXCELLENT meal we had from the Tangierine Café – the counter service place at Morocco. My wife had had a Schawarma Platter with Chicken and I had one with Lamb. Both were outstanding and a worthy alternative to table service meals at Epcot.>> Never miss it on a trip, Tripster. Although, it is getting pricier. <<The Attractions: We thought that The Seas with Nemo and Friends was a much needed addition to what was previously a pretty dead Living Seas attraction in recent years. Although it isn't a major addition no matter the spin, which is likely already starting at WDW's annual press event/whorefest. <<The changes to Pirates were also a plus, though we’d previously seen them at Disneyland. In my opinion WDW benefited more from the changes because it was not as good an attraction as DL’s was originally. (Does that make any sense to anyone besides me?)>> No sense at all. Nope. To me, it's ruined what was still a shadow of the original. PoC at DL works so well with the movie characters added because they have the space to integrate them properly without destroying the essence of the attraction. It's plussing at it's best. At the MK, as soon as you leave the loading dock, you're hit by the Davy Jones projection ... and the sound system is godawful because they left the 1973 original tracks and speakers and just added some new ones near the new characters ... it all bleeds into a mess. So, on this one, I think you're way off. <<We were disappointed by mechanical breakdowns while riding Buzz Lightyear and the Carousel of Progress; as well as technical problems causing the cancellation of Finding Nemo – The Musical at the Animal Kingdom. Hopefully this was a rare string of bad luck and not an ongoing problem of poor attraction maintenance. Disney would never let that happen, I’m sure. ;-)>> Did you ever get to see Nemo: The Musical? Not unless the media (and a couple of consultants) are around wining and dining on the companies' dime. I usually skip the Studios entirely ... I'd rather spend extra time in Epcot and/or DAK. <<Overall, WDW vacations are still the most enjoyable vacations we ever take. I’m sure that opinion will not change for years to come. But this time I saw that it ain’t all perfect in WDW land. See what my crummy board friends have done to me?? I would have arranged for a balloon and a card in your room ... signed from TDLFAN, naturally ;-)
