I'm not sure I like the sound of that. "Digital sets" sounds like projections. While not 'technically' film-based, the result may be much the same. This might be an interesting (and cost effective) technology in a new attraction, but why 'pirates'?

Pirates is the epitome of a disney e-ticket dark ride, with elaborate sets, costumes, lighting, effects, and AAs. It is the antithesis of the now typical film-based attraction.

I'm not one of those people who feel that 'pirates' (or any attraction) should remain forever frozen in time, but I also think DLs 'pirates' is one of the most important acheivements in theme park attractions, and it's overall tone and feel should not be significantly altered.

Keep the 'digital sets' for other, lesser attractions.

    However...

I, too, am skeptical about the idea of a digital set "that can be updated and changed often." Disneyland has an abysmal record of "updating" film-based attractions. All the ones in DCA are exactly the same as opening day (except for some minor editing of Golden dreams for too scary content). Muppets 3-D, HISTA, even Circlevision wasn't updated often. And let's not talk about how ancient Star Tours is getting.

Sure, they CAN update these things, that's always the big selling point. But WILL they, is the real question.

With technology now, they could easily add hundreds of elements to a background that change on a relatively random basis to provide a slightly different version of the ride all the time (are they doing this on Indy already?). For example, the storm background behind the skeleton captain at the steering wheel, fighting shadows at teh fort, or flames and fire in the jail area.
