I also doubt that this will ever see any sort of wide distribution, with Disney's legal group carefully watching over. Plus, there are all sorts of legal implications using the guests and CMs in the background as 'extras' without their knowledge or consent

It does but it's difficult to tell if that's accidental or deliberate. If it's the latter I'd probably be into it. I'm kind of twisted and sometimes this sort of weird thing appeals to me.

From what I've been told the film-makers would be covered by the generic "you could be filmed" disclaimer at the parks - even though it isn't Disney doing the filming.

For once Legal seem to be doing the right thing - just leave it be and don't give it any more publicity than it can generate itself. It doesn't specifically harm the brand.

I find that very interesting, and I'm not sure how well it would stand up legally. I don't know the exact wording of the fine print, but I believe it specifically mentions The Walt Disney Company would be the ones potentially filming, which could cause them some issues. I'm honestly much more interested in all the legal implications than the film itself

Actually it doesn't. It is deliberately vague to allow for news stations, partners etc. to film in the parks.

As a piece of guerilla filmmaking, it's astounding. For the first half hour or so, you don't watch the movie so much as marvel at how it was made.

And if you're a Disney nut, there's a whole other layer of insanity. There are times you're pulled out because you just stare at the attractions (or notice the jumps between WDW and DL). But so often they film in a spot you know so well that you're able to anticipate where the crew may encounter trouble - there's a long scene in line at the Buzz ride, and I kept thinking that they would have to hurry up because they were approaching the part of the line that forces them in front of a CM. You never get that feeling watching "Lincoln."

As for the movie itself, well, it looks gorgeous and spooky at the same time. I don't remember black and white looking that crisp and beautiful in a film; add in the limitations of the crew and it's sort of mind boggling. And seeing the usual colorful Disney sights in black and white is cool and creepy. IASW without color is an easy nightmare.

My trouble is that the acting is pretty terrible, dialogue is icky, and a lot of the movie doesn't quite work (or goes on too long). If you took the exact same set of actors, script, and crew and let them shoot the identical movie legally at Wally World, this movie would be laughed out of any theater. I found myself grading it on a curve because of the lengths they went to in order to make it.

But, and this is a big but, all of what went into making the movie is what makes the movie work. I'm watching this movie about a man in a theme park trying to escape an evil corporation, and I keep feeling this tenseness because I'm watching an actor/director elude an actual evil corporation (I know, not evil, but litigious, and that's kinda the same thing in this context). And seeing the familiar subverted IS really scary.

And not to get all English-teacher-y, but it does have a pretty intriguing take on the idea of fantasy, and how we consume so much corporate-created fantasy throughout our lives. There's also a lot there about the small difference between child fantasy and adult fantasy (beautiful young women are paid to dress up in enticing outfits, and perform for / pose for pictures with eager fans - that describes DL's Fantasy Faire AND most bachelor parties).

I have trouble recommending the film to these boards. There's nudity, gore, and unsettling images. Seeing your childhood favorites done up all evil might not be your thing. And my expectations going in probably affected my opinion: I heard about it at Sundance but never thought I'd see it. Suddenly, I'm watching it for free on my iPad. Paying to see it in the theater after a marketing rollout may have yielded different results. I don't know.

It's an amazing experience. It sticks with you. I'm glad I saw it. I just wish it were a better movie.

Good move. Legal should be more concerned about the low class garbage that works in the resort.. you know, the ones who steal from hotel guests and those who molest kids whenever they get a chance to. THAT to me is more disturbing than a cynical movie shot from an adult point of view in a place that is fake in every possible way.
