At the 2011 D23, I was in the first public audience to watch the pilot for Once Upon A Time. It was one of the most captivating and exciting shows I'd ever seen, and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. As the series grew on, it became less enthralling and more predictable. The characters were more and more like the ones in the Disney versions of the fairy tales, and there was little depth to the whole thing.

By the end of last season, I was ready to give up on the series. Having the summer break helped me feel better about the show, but the hour-long recap episode just reminded me how out of control, yet still dull, everything had gotten

The new episode did little to dispel my fears. The references to the stories/movies have become incredibly direct (Belle and Rumplestiltskin dancing under a chandelier, wearing the exact same outfits from the move, listening to the same song) which cheapens the whole experience for me. Instead of showing us a new side of the Frozen characters, like they've done with other characters in the past, we're simply picking up where the film left off and continuing the story. The costuming is identical and the personalities are the same. It still has potential to improve, but I'm not holding my breath

That said, I really enjoyed what they did with Regina. She's always been the heart of the series, and she has potential to make for an interesting season. I thought that the office door scene with her and Emma was a nice play on Frozen, and was just enough of a hint to be clever. She's showing her evil side again (I thought she had Sidney killed several seasons back?), but is still trying to be good, which makes her the most interesting thing we've seen yet

I'm still not sure how I feel about this series. When it started, you needed to actively watch to pick up on all the small details and references. The story web has become so tangled that they've really streamlined things in recent seasons. It makes it easier to "watch" the show while doing something else, but makes it less compelling of a story. If I continue on with this season, I will be "watching" it, unlike the more detail-focused way I've watched it in the past

What I found most fun about the show was the different twists on the original Disney fairy tales. At first I could hardly wait for the next week to find out what was going to happen...Now, not so much.
Regina is my favorite too :)

Same here the Pan story went on way too long and Witch of the west ended so anticlimactic. The biggest nit pick I have with the show is they say all the time 3 things magic can't do but 2 have been done.

time travel and bringing back the dead. All Regina had to do was split snow's heart in half which brought charming back to life????

I'm still on the fence but with the hint of Yensid maybe...maybe it'll be a better season.
