    The funny thing is that Alcatraz is federal land and they have no authority to do this. Also, they don't have financial resources to do this either. So what's the point???

    In order to build ANYTHING on alcatraz, you would first need to provide a way to supply the island with fresh water. There's none currently, and there never was. People may not realize that for the island's entire history, fresh water had be to brought to the island in containers.

    In all the years I've lived here in SF, one crazy scheme after another has been proposed for alcatraz, and none have ever addressed the water question. There are really only two options - either run plumbing underneath and across the bay, or install a desalinization plant. Either choice is wildly expensive and impractical.

    I don't think we'll see anything on alcatraz beyond what's there right now in our lifetimes.
