I remember clips when David Archuletta lost of these tween girls just being devastated. You'd think their puppy had just died. It was like their world was over and they'd never love again. David Cook appealed to the slightly older (13-14) year old girl who had "graduated" from someone like David Archuletta to the ever-so-slightly more "bad boy" - not really bad, just a little rockier and not as clean as Archuletta. I have several friends with girls that age, and they loved Cook almost as much as their younger sisters loved Archuletta. Anyway, it's girls that age who vote in droves and dozens of times a night, not boys. <It's funny how different people like different contestants though. I wouldn't have though Melinda Doolittle was the most gifted singer they ever had. > Well, that's my opinion. I still remember when she sang "My Funny Valentine" and my jaw was on the floor. Because I've heard that song sung countless times, and by some of the truly great singers of the 20th century (Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, et al); and yet when she did it, it was like I was hearing it for the first time. In terms of her phrasing, her tone, and especially her ability to communicate a lyric to the audience, I don't think they've had anyone on AI who can touch her. Of course, those things aren't, sadly, of much importance to current pop music, which relies much more on production, "ear candy," and highly repetitive lyrics. And with modern production tricks and technology, people who look good but really can't sing that well can be made to sound like they can.

And, like Christopher Walken, she is someone who can crack me up saying the most ordinary thing. In fact, I can crack up just thinking of Charo. Love her.

Thanks for the link, Lisann. I read through the interview twice and came to the conclusion that he didn't say anything especially revealing, substantive, or challenging -- despite the hype USA Today's writer gave the article. He did, though, come across as more thoughtful and articulate than he ever did on AI. And I'm sure he's at a point at which he needs to be careful about what he says about his label. So I'm encouraged to think that someday he'll say more than "Amazing!" and "Thank you!"
