I knew my whole life that my parents would be able to pay for very little of my college education, as did my sibblings, but all four of us picked cheap schools and got through. (BTW: the 4 year school w/the lowest average student loan burden? Not one of those inexpensive state schools, Well Endowed Princton. Another reason to rack up those A grades and get into a well endowed Ivy, though they're not all as generous as Princeton.) I would also love to know what percentage of all Californians are first of second generation immigrants. Not an insignifigant number I'm sure, though I doubt it's anywhere near 2/3 to 1/2.
