On the other hand, because this pic is just of some bumpy white cotton, it can never be ascribed to anyone in particular. Add to this that the source is Breitbart, a GOP slimeball with a long history of falsely maligning democratic politicos, and the whole story looks like a disgusting setup. The problem is Weiner himself. For whatever reason, he's failed to emphatically state that it isn't him, and that he had nothing to do with any of this. Instead he's being cagey and parsing his answers in a suspicious manner. Even if it is him, no crime has been committed here. I want to believe that this is all just another one of Breitbart's sleazy fabricated smear jobs - for which no one in the republican party ever takes him to task over. I just wish Weiner would issue a straight denial. As long as he dances around the issue, the more the questions linger.

If he didn't do this, then the response is easy and could even be turned into political fodder ("Those slimy Republicans are at it again!"). You'd think a firebrand like him would love an excuse to go after a major delta-bravo like Breitbart. Instead he just seems so desperate for it to all go away. He acts guilty. Which is a terrible way to assess if he really did do this, and I recognize that. It could even be that he's having flashbacks to junior high being teased about his name, and he's just embarrassed. But to say he's not sure if it's him in the photo? Sounds an awful lot like hedging bets. I really like the guy and really, really hope it all just goes away for him.

Maybe he took it and sent it to his wife (who he just married last summer) with a text saying something like "thinking of you, baby." And maybe what we've seen is cropped and the full pic shows him from the waist-up too. Maybe he has hacked (Maddow and others showed just how easy it is to hack in to twitter and send something as though you were someone else, so it seems LIKELY to me that he was indeed hacked). And if his twitter account was hacked... maybe his whole computer was hacked by some right-wing operative, and that pic was the most salacious thing he could find. And maybe that hacker is hoping... praying... that Weiner categorically denies the picture is him, and is ready to pounce immediately with the whole uncropped picture, showing it IS him, and making Weiner toast. And maybe Weiner has figured this out and thus can't deny that it's him (in case the whole pic is leaked later), yet CAN deny that he sent it to the woman in Seattle, which he probably didn't. I know, I know. An awful lot of maybes in there. But for the life of me, I can't figure out why he'd deny sending it, yet NOT deny it was him flat out, unless he thinks (or knows) there's a chance it is. I'm guessing (just a guess) that there's no big crime here. At worst, it's him and he originally sent it to someone not his wife. But there's no way that can be proven from this bogus hacked twitter-send. Maybe he took that pic for his wife, neglected to delete it from his hard drive, and it ended up being the worst thing the hacker found on his computer, and now Weiner's just wishing it would all go away, because he really didn't do anything wrong. I don't know. Totally don't know. But maybe.
