As for her performance, I had heard before I saw it that it was pretty bad. When I was watching it, I just had to keep waiting to see what was so awful about it. My roommates and I (all of whom know music quite well) noticed from the very beginning that her microphone was way too loud, and you could hear it echoing through the arena, which didn't happen with any of the other performers of the night. She was kind of out of balance with her band, but it became very noticable when Stevie Nicks started singing with her, and you could only hear Taylor Swift singing the harmony. The close country harmonies aren't the same as those in pop and rock music, so it sounded a little funny, especially to people who didn't know that it wasn't supposed to be the melody. Her performance wasn't outstanding, but there was nothing she could have done better with it. It was very adequate. There were technical issues with it, which was a shame, but the performance itself was pretty well done. If we want to complain about bad performances, I have plenty of acts that I'd like to nominate. Starting with Beyonce's use of a ton of dancers who didn't dance. She's known for putting on a great stage show experience, so it surprised me that it was pretty much just her standing there singing. Pink's aerial act was a little much for me, and her actual performance in it was quite forgettable, if you take away the shock factor of the whole thing. The Green Day/musical number just wasn't very well done and looked to me like an unwanted love child of Across the Universe and Rent. I won't be surprised when the musical closes within a few months of opening. And the Jamie Foxx number...what was that? There were just a bunch of random artists standing up there doing their own thing. We were originally supposed to be a part of it (when it was just him and Justin Timberlake), but it looks like they changed the direction of it, and I'm glad they left us out of it. There were plenty of bad performances of the night. There were even a couple great ones (Lady Gaga and Elton John, Andrea Bocceli and Mary J Blige). Taylor Swifts falls right in the middle. It wasn't a big show stopper with lots of fancy stuff going on, but it was executed well. Not perfect, but there were many many far worse performances of the night that don't seem to be getting any mention at all.

My little 3 year old will stop everything else she is doing to listen (and sing along) to a Taylor Swift song. It is something to see.

I agree that she doesn't have a great voice, and that is evident even on her studio recordings, but her lyrics are emotionally driven and catchy and I do enjoy it. I saw her perform live when she co-headlined with Kenney Chesney here in Edmonton and she was an amazing entertainer and I enjoyed every minute of her show.
