    But now...

Do I need to buy a Premium to see the parks at their least crowded??? ie, when all other (bazillion) APers are blocked?

    Yes.

The number of tourists is now insignificant compared to the number of APholders. Therefore the best time to go is on an AP blockout date.

We always go on the 4th of July, which is now bearable compared to an October Sunday when no APs are blocked out.
