First Pixar movie not to open at Number 1 - thanks to JW.

Highest grossing first weekend for a movie based on an original screenplay - beating Avatar.

How crazy is Hollywood that the previous record holder only managed $77m. Avatar is at number 64 on the all-time first weekend list. So the first 63 are either sequels, based on books/comic books or reboots.

It is no wonder that the studios rarely spend money on original tentpoles any more.

I'm also surprised that sooooo many of the top opening weekends are from existing content. I guess it's easier to build hype on something that people already know, where the new films tend to open lower and build. I also suspect it's partially due to the ever-rising cost of movie tickets, and the huge reliance on franchises these days. Even movies that did incredibly well a decade or two ago get eclipsed by today's expensive (and even moreso with 3D) tickets

It seems Pixar is still a very strong brand and that the company is still capable of producing such fantastic movie. I'm just pis*ed (is it allowed to use such phrases here?) that I have to wait until October to see it.

I'm really happy to hear that. I thought it was so clever and well done, hope it continues to do well. It deserves to!
