The theatrical release was originally scheduled for early last year, but was cancelled because they didn't think there would be enough of a market for it. After "The Lion King" blew past all expectations, they quickly scheduled the BatB theatrical run. -Jeff

First of all, the way they create the 3D effect after-the-fact is to distort the drawings. Stuff in the foreground is enlarged, and stuff in the background is shrunk, which can get kind of crazy on something that has both foreground and background elements. Like the closeups of Belle and the Beast when they're dancing. Secondly, and I've hashed this out a lot here but here goes again, 3D doesn't work with cel-type animation. In a shot with a lot of detail and shading there's no problem, but solid color areas can't carry distance cues. So what you wind up with is big flat 2-dimensional areas of color with "wire" lines (and eyeballs and noses and such) sticking up out of them, or worse, floating in front of them. 3D-izing cel animation is analogous to colorizing B&W movies. It might look cool to an indiscriminate viewer who's not paying much attention, but it's also taking a severe beating to the filmmakers' original intent for very limited upside. They're also releasing B&tB in 2D. Those are the theaters that will be showing "one of your favorite movies". (Assuming that Disney doesn't pull a switcheroo and just give you one eye of the 3D version, which would leave you with the distortion without the theoretical 3D benefits.)

In all this version seemed brighter both in picture and sound. While I have mixed feelings about redoing 2D animation, there are some films that cry out for 3D. Just the little bit of "Finding Nemo" we saw today makes me want to see it in 3D when it's out in the fall. And I LOVED "Tangled Ever After"!!!!!

I'm all for reissues of classic films, but not a fan of converting movies into 3D just for the sake of selling a more expensive ticket.
