I think that Johnny was the classiest act. But, to the others' defense, Johnny hosted at a time when popularity and simple classiness could carry the host. Back then, the success of the Oscars broadcast was pretty much a given. Since that time, there has been (a) the advent of cable television and thereby a huge increase in programming that competes with the broadcast, and (b) a glut of new annual awards shows that reduces the sense of specialness the American audience used to feel toward the Oscar show. So now in order to remain competitive the Oscars show has to be re-invented and made Even More Fresh each year. The producers can't trust that simple classiness on the host's part can sell it. They need something flashier. But they can't afford to get TOO edgy, because, after all, what they're trying to sell is "industry credibility." Given those parameters, I think Ellen is a very good choice of hosts.
