The things he spoke of - "intellectual vigor," the party shifting right and becoming more narrow (and many other things) - reasonate very strongly with me. I've been posting about conservatives who have not supported McCain and with Powell now among them it makes me worry about what will happen to the party. I am not looking forward to the reaction. To minimize the damage, they'll have to either trash him (which I can NOT imagine) or they'll try marginalize him. It'll be disheartening to see either.

My grandfather (101st Airborne, 2 Purple Hearts) always taught me that above anything else, I am an American first. Powell often speaks to that and his example today was so important in that regard. I hope people actually hear what he's saying.
