    I believe it's a relic from around WWII when Disney had to resort to liscensing characters to other companies to try and make money. Since they continually went over budget on the films for the military, the company needed to make money elsewhere to stay in business. The package films that they released in theaters didn't do as well as they had hoped, so they began liscensing characters to make money. Donald Duck Orange Juice is pretty much the only one that remains from that time, but there is also Peter Pan Peanut Butter (obviously from after WWII) in most grocery stores, which uses Disney's Peter Pan on the label.
