Alas, a Shuttle Van is about $40 for a single person, and about $30 for each additional person in the same van (and same group). I am not a fan of Ontario unless you are planning to rent a car. (Shuttle Vans are cheaper, and there is the Airport Bus from LAX, and it is about the same distance as from Ontario - 35 miles) Have you checked Hotwire.com on your exact dates, you can usually find a rental car for less than $20 a day, except during very peak times.

Are their shuttles readily available from Long Beach and do you know the cost? Is it worth the extra hassle?

You might have to call and ask for one to come to the airport (special phones), as the airport is the smallest and slowest in the SoCal area. (Which makes it the best, IMHO). So from Long Beach, either a rental car, or a taxi is my preference.
