Is it best if I leave the wife and kids and grandmother at the termnial while I go get the van, and come back and pick them up, or should we just all go together? What about dropping off at the end? All stay together, or drop them off first at the terminal so they can relax while I take care of the van? Any suggestions?

For the return trip, it's faster to just drop off the family with the bags at the airport, let them check all or most of the bags for you with the skycap, then you can re-join them after you ride the shuttle back before all of you get your boarding passes together.
