Granted, if you're there that early, you could probably just get on the ride with a minimal wait, so I don't really know what to recommend And the crowds should be pretty light during your visit (at least on the weekdays). If you use the single rider queue, I would expect that you won't have too many issues getting on the ride with minimal waits

(I've tried to go straight to the Bugs Land area where they are actually distributed in the past and had to go all the way back to the line at Carthay Circle before. Trust me, go straight to the Carthay Circle). This has proven to be the best way to get a fastpass in the am for us. We are usually one of the first to get a fastpass, so if we wanted we could also keep moving straight over to the attraction and ride as a walk on immediately and then use our fast passes later. This would be the best thing to do if your time in the parks is limited and you won't be able to do that same thing on a different day. You DEFINITELY want to ride this more than once.

I am definitely going to use your strategy of Obtain Fast Pass, then walk on. We are arriving in Anaheim on Monday around noon. So we will go to the parks that afternoon. I plan to check out where all the new stuff is in DCA on that afternoon so I will know what to do on Tuesday morning when we get there.

With the madness of rope drop and how people would get trampled trying to obtain a fastpass, I can see why they do this. They have a cm by each fast pass distribution machine and they help people move through there as quickly as possible.
