I guess with travelers checks, i feel fairly safe, because i know they can be replaced if you are to lose them or if they are stolen.

Those are two of the easiest places to have fraud committed with a card and with a credit card you can fight the charges before you are actually out the $$.

Hopefully it's the same procedure where if there is fraud on my card, it will be put back into my account. Thanks for the info.

Originally Posted By SuzieQ mousegrl, my accounts are BofA, too. The problem is, debit cards are cash straight out of your account. You've still got to have the cash in your account to cover the rest of your vacation until the bank mess gets straightened out. Checks are different and quicker to have reimbursed. You knew they were stolen. With a debit card, the cash is gone before you know someone committed the fraud. There are card readers that fit in the palm of your hand. One swipe of your card, and a little hard drive stores all the information on the magnetic stripe. This data is then used to create a new debit card (they just stamp a blank of whatever type of credit card or debit card they have), and put your data onto their magnetic stripe. The card can be in their name, they can show their own ID, and the money is taken from your account without your knowing until you look at the account activity. I'm not at all paraniod about using debit and credit cards. I bank online, pay my bills online, and do quite a bit of shopping on the internet. But if you get any kind of education in fraud investigation, you quickly learn never to use a debit card for restaurants and hotels!

I've never thought about using it at restaurants and hotels being a risk. I'll stick with my Visa and cash from now on!

Thank you everyone for the advice!
